Stingray Leather, Full Skin, Exotic Leather

What is Stingray Leather: Stingray leather is prized among exotic leather for its unique look, durability, and sheen. Sourced from the rich, tropical waters of Indonesia, our stingray skins undergo expert tanning and finishing on site to enhance the naturally pebbled texture and brilliant luster. Known for its extreme toughness, stingray leather is highly resistant to wear, water, and fire, making it a favorite for high-end accessories, wallets, knife sheaths, and more.

The surface of each stingray skin is pebbled with beadlike structures known as ‘dermal denticles’ made from dense calcium similar to teeth. At the center of the spine is a raised diamond-shaped ‘crown’ or ‘eye’ naturally forming from the densest area of denticles and often sought after as a focal point for luxury goods. Our extensive selection of colors of stingray leather and other varieties of exotic leather skins is the largest in the USA.

Source: Our stingray skins are sourced from the wild in Indonesia, where the meat is used for consumption.

How to Cut Stingray Leather: Cutting stingray leather requires a different approach than cutting traditional leathers due to its tough, bony texture, but is still very manageable!

  • Step 1: Mark cut line using silver pen, chalk, or scratch awl. Cut from the flesh (back) side for easier handling.
  • Step 2: Using a utility knife or rotary cutter, apply firm, steady pressure along cut line and make multiple passes for clean cuts. Go slow - rushing can lead to uneven or jagged cuts. Make sure your blades are sharp and change them often. Stingray leather dulls blades fast.
  • Step 3: Trim with heavy-duty scissors for details and small adjustments.
  • Step 4: Smooth edges with a diamond file, sandpaper, or sanding machine. Wear a mask and work in a ventilated area as cutting and sanding stingray creates dust that can be irritating.

How to Work with Exotic Leather

Working with exotic leathers follows many of the same techniques as traditional leathercraft, but with a few key considerations. Exotic leathers often benefit from added structure, so we recommend gluing the leather to a layer of bovine leather or another material backing using Intercom Glue or Barge Cement. To add extra strength and to reduce stretch, add a layer of Corazza Reinforcement between the layers. To ensure clean, smooth edges, it's best to glue first before cutting. With the right preparation, exotic leathers can be cut, stitched, and finished just like traditional leather, adding a distinctive touch to any project.

Exotic Leather Grading

All of our Exotic Leathers are grades 1-2, consisting of the highest quality available. Leathers of this grade are generally expected to yield 80-90% of usable surface grain area. Like any full-grain leather hide, there may be natural cuts, marks, wrinkles, or other natural characteristics to the uncorrected-grain of the skin. None of our exotics have brands.

Responsible Sourcing & Trade

All of our Exotic Leathers are sourced and imported following the highest standards. We ensure to meet all the regulations overseen by CITES (The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora). CITES is an international body supported in agreement of governments around the world for the responsible and sustainable trade of wild plants and animals to ensure the long-term survival of all species.
