Ostrich Leg Leather, Full Skin, Exotic Leather

What is Ostrich Leg Leather: Ostrich leg leather is durable and flexible with a unique scale-like texture that adds character to wallets, watch straps, footwear, and small leather goods. Sourced from the shin area of farm-raised South African ostriches, each skin is first tanned at the source to retain its distinctive grain and strength. The skins are then sent to the USA for specialized finishing techniques that enhance their appearance and workability. Our extensive selection of colors of ostrich leg leather and other varieties of exotic leather skins is the largest in the USA.

Source: Our ostrich leg skins are a natural by-product of the South African ostrich meat industry.

Types of Ostrich Leg Leather:

  • Glossy Ostrich Leg Leather: Hand polished in the USA with an agate stone, our 'Glossy' version of Ostrich Leg has a high-shine finish that accentuates the raised scales and deepens the color. This traditional technique enhances the contrast between the smooth areas and textured ridges, making each skin visually dynamic.
    • Grain (Top): Smooth with natural texture
    • Finish: Glossy
  • Suede Ostrich Leg Leather: Our 'Suede' ostrich leg is the result of a multi-step sanding process that softens the surface and produces a matte texture with a two-tone effect. This technique, performed here in the US, brings out the natural scaly pattern while giving the leather a supple, velvety feel that works well for softer, understated designs.
    • Grain (Top): Soft with velvety texture
    • Finish: Matte Suede
  • Hand Painted Ostrich Leg Leather: Our 'Hand Painted' ostrich legs first receive a white base coat of paint that covers the entire skin, before a darker color is applied by hand using sponges and rags. This artisanal technique done here in the US creates depth and variation in tone, highlighting the scales and giving each piece a one-of-a-kind character.
    • Grain (Top): Smooth with natural texture
    • Finish: Two-tone (white plus another color)

How to Work with Exotic Leather

Working with exotic leathers follows many of the same techniques as traditional leathercraft, but with a few key considerations. Exotic leathers often benefit from added structure, so we recommend gluing the leather to a layer of bovine leather or another material backing using Intercom Glue or Barge Cement. To add extra strength and to reduce stretch, add a layer of Corazza Reinforcement between the layers. To ensure clean, smooth edges, it's best to glue first before cutting. With the right preparation, exotic leathers can be cut, stitched, and finished just like traditional leather, adding a distinctive touch to any project.

Exotic Leather Grading

All of our Exotic Leathers are grades 1-2, consisting of the highest quality available. Leathers of this grade are generally expected to yield 80-90% of usable surface grain area. Like any full-grain leather hide, there may be natural cuts, marks, wrinkles, or other natural characteristics to the uncorrected-grain of the skin. None of our exotics have brands.

Responsible Sourcing & Trade

All of our Exotic Leathers are sourced and imported following the highest standards. We ensure to meet all the regulations overseen by CITES (The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora). CITES is an international body supported in agreement of governments around the world for the responsible and sustainable trade of wild plants and animals to ensure the long-term survival of all species. Visit www.cites.org for more information on CITES standards & guidelines.
