Bonded Nylon Thread refers to a resin coating that provides a protective layer around the fibers. This helps to reduce friction, increase strength, improve seam durability, and to resist abrasion, fraying, and breaking. Nylon threads are designed for heavy duty and multi-directional sewing applications and for materials such as leather, canvas, vinyl, and more. They are used for indoor and outdoor use, are water resistant, UV resistant, and color fade resistant, but are not recommended for sustained outdoor use like pool furniture. Bonded Nylon 6.6 has a high break resistance and elasticity which is great for items that need to stretch such as bags, wallets, shoes, handbags, purses, briefcases, leather goods, upholstery, car seats, and more. Bonded Nylon 66 is also the choice for high speed and industrial sewing machines, but can also be used for hand sewing. Bonded threads have a smooth consistent finish and can feel slightly stiffer than non-bonded threads.

Nylon 66 vs Regular Nylon:

  • Nylon 66 is stronger, creates less friction, and has a higher heat tolerance when compared to standard Nylon thread.
  • Nylon 66 uses an additional bonding agent that coats the fibers.
  • Nylon 66 is a bonded polyamide 6.6 continuous filament material.
  • Also referred to as Nylon 6.6, Polyamide 6, and Nylon6.

How to Measure Tex Weight?

Tex weight is one of the many ways of measuring thread, where a Tex of 70 is thinner than a Tex of 135. Tex is equal to the weight in grams of 1000 meters of the thread you are measuring. For example, if a 1000 meter spool weights 70 grams, then it is a Tex 70. For leatherwork and canvas tex weights generally start at 60 and above. Tex weights below 60 are considered light and medium weight threads often used on finer products with little abrasion resistance.
