Conceria La Bretagna, Invecchiato, Vachetta Leather, Double Shoulder

The 'Invecchiato' tannage developed in 1967 is described as "sweet shades, delicate contrasts of color, and eternal beauty." As perhaps the most famous of all La Bretagna leathers, the Invecchiato tannage represents the soul, pride and history of the tannery. The leather is tumbled (milled), which provides a slight pebbled grain texture. The leather is then hand stained on a natural base. The tumbling helps the hand staining process because it allows for better stain absorption which therefore presents a double-tone 'marbled' coloring effect offering unique character to every piece. Finally the leather is ironed, which creates a glossy finish and smooths out the leather grain while keeping a light pebbling.

The Tannery: La Bretagna - Tuscany, Italy (est. 1961)

  • La Bretagna was established in 1961 and is still run by the same Testi family in Tuscany, Italy.
  • Not only are the articles produced at La Bretagna some of the best in the world, what also sets La Bretagna apart is its willingness to research, develop, and invest in new technologies and methods. This is a big reason why we were initially drawn to this tannery.
  • With the intention to source the best quality raw materials, La Bretagna sources nearly all of its hides from a region in France called "La Bretagne", thus the name and logo.
  • Being a 100% vegetable tannery, the tanneries ethos revolves around sustainability with a focus on the earth and the environment. You can read about any of the tannery leathers and you will learn how the earth holds inspiration behind each.
  • Vachetta leather is a special type of vegetable tanned leather that uses animal fats (tallow) and oils, as well as other natural vegetable oils. Vachetta leathers tend to be softer than other veg tan leathers such as bridle and harness.
  • 100% Aniline finish: The use of transparent aniline dyes allows the unique full grain texture of the hide to be visible.
  • Great yields. You will find that nearly the entire full grain double shoulder is usable.
  • These leathers are commonly used for higher end leather goods such as wallets, belts, shoes, furniture, handbags, purses, briefcases, key fobs, and other small accessories.
